With the rise of South Asia as a global political, economic and cultural influence, professional proficiency in the sister languages of Hindi and Urdu is a unique asset for any student interested in an international career.
A four-year program at the University of Texas at Austin, the Hindi Urdu Flagship offers undergraduate students the opportunity to:
- gain professional fluency in these two critical languages
- spend a year in India studying language and participating in a professional internship
- complete a major in one of over 170 fields of study available to UT Austin undergraduates
The Academic Program
The program is designed to provide intense language and cultural study as a complement to a student's major of choice. Current HUF student majors include Business, Government, Economics, Biology, Communications and Engineering.
Hallmarks of HUF's innovative approach include:
- a core Flagship language course taught each semester
- personalized instruction from world renowned faculty
- an individualized program of study and internship in India
- customized area content courses incorporating study in a Hindi Urdu medium
- one-to-one weekly mentoring from graduate students
- a dedicated Hindi Urdu Resource Center featuring a wide array of newly developed language learning media and student support staff
Initiatives and Projects
As the first and only program of its kind, HUF serves as a center for undergraduate Hindi Urdu education in the US. With the long-term goal of encouraging innovation and growth in Hindi Urdu education nationwide, HUF has developed a number of large-scale pedagogical projects including Language for Health, K-12 Outreach, the Hindi Urdu Speaker Series, A Spoken Thesaurus, Mera Shahar, and Hamaarii Bolii.
