The year in India, usually a student's junior year, is a crucial component in a HUF student's progress to professional fluency. Students spend most of the year in Lucknow, the cultural heart of the Urdu tradition, studying language and culture at the American Institute for Indian Studies. The year also features intense, academic excursions to the linguistic and cultural hubs of Jaipur, Varanasi, and Hyderabad.
While in Lucknow, students live with Hindi and Urdu speaking families, study Hindi and Urdu intensively, and also take additional courses with professors from Indian universities. During the last two months students participate in an internship with NGO's, small businesses, or other institutions.
