Summer Hindi-Urdu intensive to be offered for high school & undergraduate students | Mar 30 2010

Startalk-Siphur 2010, targeted for high school and undergraduate students, will offer a three-week summer intensive language program from June 21 to July 9. Accepted students will receive a $1,600 scholarship to pay for tuition and room & board. Participants receive two college credits upon completion of the program.

2010 HUF Essay Contest Announced | Feb 18 2010

The Second Annual Hindi Urdu Flagship Essay Contest is now underway, all current Hindi Urdu Flagship students are invited to participate. The theme for this year is “What all Americans should know about South Asia.”. The winner will be announced at the Department of Asian Studies spring festival. First prize is $100.

DLI representative to meet with potential Urdu teachers | Jan 29 2010

Dr. Jack Franke, Dean, Emerging Languages Task Force, Defense Language Institute (DLIFLC), Monterey, CAL, will be at the Hindi Urdu Flagship, HRH 3.102, on Friday, January 29, 2-3PM. He would like to speak to native and near-native speakers of Urdu, who might be interested in teaching Urdu at DLIFLC.

HUF student and instructor receive presitigious literary awards | November 09 2009

At a packed mushaira (poetry symposium) in Houston, TX current Hindi Urdu Flagship student, Shan Khan, and current HUF teaching assistant, Max Bruce were awarded the extremely presitigious Asrar-al-Haque Majaz Literary Award for their ongoing original study of Urdu poetry. The award, chosen by the alumni association of Aligarh Muslim University, was awarded by one of Urdu's finest living poets, Professor Waseem Barelwi. An award was presented to HUF Associate Director, Dr. Sarah Green, in acknowledgment of HUF's contribution to the enhancement of Urdu studies. Max Bruce then thrilled the audience of over 500 with a recitation of a self-composed ghazal.

News of the award was a front page feature in India's (and the world's) most-read daily newspaper, Dainik Jagran. The story also ran in a number of other leading and regional Hindi dailies.

2007 cohort begin their year in India | September 8 2009

India

The Hindi Urdu Flagship's 2007 cohort have begun their third year in the Flagship Program, most of which will be spent in north India. During the preceding spring semester, the students participated in a series of orientations aimed at preparing them for the practical, cultural and academic components of their year in India. The students arrived in Delhi in mid August 2009. After a week of orientation in Delhi, they have now moved to AIIS Hindi center in Jaipur, Rajasthan. After six weeks of Hindi language study, they will move on to study Urdu in Lucknow with cultural excursions to Varanasi and Hyderabad. For the final stage of the program, students will participate in professional Hindi Urdu medium internships related to their particular major and career track.

The Hindi Urdu Flagship is now accepting applications for Fall 2010 admission. Prospective and current UT students can apply. Review our eligibility criteria and application checklist. Applications should be submitted online.

Orientation 2009

The Hindi Urdu Flagship welcomed both new and returning members with a welcome brunch and orientation Aug 23-24 in the Hindi Urdu Resource Center (HRH 3.102). Parents and siblings joined the celebratory brunch catered by Bombay Bistro. The following afternoon, HUF faculty and staff conducted in-depth orientation sessions for new and returning Flagship cohorts. All involved are now looking forward to a new year of Hindi Urdu immersion!
