Frequently Asked Questions: Flagship Careers

What level of competence in Hindi and Urdu will be reached by the time I graduate?

Successful students will achieve a high level of fluency in all the language skills, and will be able to function with confidence in a wide range of contexts of language use, as required in various professional fields. They will also acquire a sophisticated understanding and appreciation of the cultural backgrounds to the languages.

Am I required to work in government jobs after graduating?

No, there is no such requirement. Alumni can decide for themselves whether to work for government agencies or to pursue a career in business, education, or non-profit organizations. Opportunities to find out about government employment will however be offered from time to time.

I am a graduate student at UT and come from a Hindi-speaking background in India. Can I work as a TA on the program?

While we cannot give any automatic assurances of employment, we do regularly need the help of Hindi-speaking graduate students in our teaching and mentoring of Flagship undergraduates, and will give training in language-teaching to all who join us in this way. A background in one of the subjects taught within the Flagship program – history, anthropology, business studies and so on – would be particularly useful, as our TAs are expected to offer an element of subject-specific mentoring as well as class teaching. Many graduates’ students would find this a rewarding experience (not to mention a useful addition to their CVs), and Flagship students benefit greatly from contact with a wide range of instructors. If you feel that there might be a role for you here, please contact the Flagship administration.
