Frequently Asked Questions: Study Abroad

Am I required to study abroad during my junior year?

Yes, study abroad in India is an essential and integrated part of the Flagship program.

What does the year in India involve?

HUF’s Year in India is a collaborative arrangement between UT Austin and the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS), which is a consortium of American Universities that has offered language programsin India since the 1960s. Students spend periods of language study in Jaipur and Lucknow, with cultural excursions to Varanasi and Hyderabad. In addition to language courses, students are also able to take major or elective courses for UT credit. The final component of the year consists of individual internship related to each student’s professional field. The internship will give students opportunities to work with NGOs in such areas as healthcare and women and children's education, or with corporations in the areas of international finance and business.

How much support and guidance is offered to students during their year in India? My parents have concerns about my safety and well being as I have never lived away from home before.

For its study abroad component, the Flagship has partnered with the American Institute of Indian Studies, an organization with many years of experience in helping American students to study and live in India (including many who have not been to the subcontinent before). AIIS has developed a sophisticated support system dealing with all aspects of the encounter. All students are fully briefed on issues of health, security, cultural sensibilities and "fitting in". The Flagship staff in UT will also keep in close contact by email with all students throughout their Year in India, and personal advice will be available at all times.
